Can the Spice Girls be the inspiration you needed to kickstart a career in accounting?
First things first: Some context
25 years ago, something big happened that changed our world. No, it was not the impending millennium and the start of the new century, although this was majorly important, but it is something that changed our pop culture and the way people could express themselves.
Yes, I am talking about the release of ‘Wannabe’ by The Spice Girls. Although, to some this may not be a significant event, but before 1996, the world of music was dominated by male musicians and boybands; feeling that this need to be changed, five ordinary girls did an extraordinary thing. They broke the mould, became successful and allowed girls everywhere to feel that they could do anything they wanted, and that it is important to be yourself and to not to allow the world around you to shape who you become.
Is there any relevance?!
Now I hear you cry what does a pop song have to do with accounting, or studying an AAT qualification, but change is a massive thing for everyone, when it comes to world pop domination or changing careers, and it can be quite a scary thought to venture into something new. So being a course advisor, I get asked a lot of questions from prospective students who haven’t got experience in accounting, about changing their careers and whether it is right for them. With this in mind, I thought I would share some good reasons why you should take the plunge and change your careers and why change is good!
After the last few years we have had, there is never a better time to want to do something for yourself, the great thing about accounting is that every business needs someone to work in an accounting or bookkeeping role. Doing something for yourself is a wonderful thing to be able to do, and you don’t always know what is going to happen if you don’t try, much like The Spice Girls, so grab the opportunity by both hands as you never know where it will take you!
Discover how you can do it!
Change can feel very scary and sometimes daunting, but by taking yourself out of your comfort zone and trying something new can be a wonderous thing and can really help you to succeed! You shouldn’t try living your life by what ifs, and sometimes putting something off can be more dangerous than going ahead with it, so have the confidence to take that leap of faith and make the change that can really make a great happy impact to your life.
As above, every business needs someone working in a finance role, and with accounting being such a diverse and much needed profession, there are so many options available to be able to venture into this industry. If you are going to change your job prospects, why not go for something that is always going to be around and can provide you with many fantastic opportunities. The skills you will learn are so transferrable, you can really have confidence that you can use them for any job prospect that may come your way.
A couple of concluding thoughts…
Lastly, if you feel this passionate about something just do it! If you have always wanted to get into accounting, then make the big first step and just enquire about studying an AAT qualification. Things do not come to those who wait, and the longer you put this off the later your life will begin to change.
With change there is always something negative that is associated with this, when in fact, changing your career and change in general, can be good for your mental health and happiness. So, if something scares you, just face it head on and don’t ponder your choices!
If in 1996, these five young girls did not think the music scene needed changing, they would not have paved the way for some of the most popular artists of today to begin their careers and achieve their dreams. If you really, really, really want something in life, just go for it and if you never give up then you will get there in the end!
