Star Student March 2025: Josh Poston

Personal Tutor: Chrissy

After completing my A levels at Sixth Form I was not sure which career I wanted to pursue. I knew I enjoyed working with numbers and working in a service-based role so I decided to embark on a career in Accounting, securing an apprenticeship at Devon County Council as a Financial Administrator. Their apprenticeship programme involved me rotating around various services and teams within the Council including Children Social Services, Devon Assurance Partnership and Peninsula Pensions. Moving around teams provided me with an invaluable opportunity in learning more about the working relationships, cultures and styles and a broad working knowledge of a variety of IT and accounting systems.

Alongside the day job I have completed my Level 2 and Level 3 AAT within Accountancy Learning.  I have thoroughly enjoyed learning and developing my professional skills and ability. Here I would like to acknowledge my great tutor Chrissy, who is always on hand and happy to answer any questions, mark a lot of past papers and in general give me the support to plough on when things become overwhelming.

I’m currently waiting on my results for my Synoptic Level 3 exam; once received my plan is to hit the ground running and continue with the Level 4 AAT with the Accountancy Learning Team.  Outside of my professional studies and to unwind, I enjoy a lot of running and triathlon training; I am currently training for my first Iron Man Challenge 70.3 this coming September.

Josh has grown from a struggling student to one of strong determination and focus. The apprenticeship can present many challenges and students must ensure they have a strong understanding of the road ahead and be prepared to put in the time to achieve. Josh struggled to get the best out of his study sessions and so with my support we worked hard to focus Josh on his preferred learning style and suggested improvements to his study technique and general approach. Josh found his rhythm and passed every exam first time, a huge achievement and we are now discussing progression to L4. Josh has also worked hard to network within Devon County Council shadowing colleagues and receiving new tasks where applicable focusing on a wider range of experiences. Josh always receives positive feedback from his line manager. Outside of the apprenticeship Josh is very active with his local community spending time volunteering with the local park run and training for his first Iron Man.
