23-29 September 2024 is National Inclusion Week. Many employers feel that it is important to have a diverse range of people in their workforce because the diversity can improve how the business performs. Having a lot of cloned employees can lead to poor decision making. Recruiting from only a few parts of society just limits the pool of talent from which employers can choose
Inclusion covers a wide range of groups. In many cases we think about gender, ethnicity and disability but we also need to think about things like social mobility. Research from the Social Mobility Foundation suggests that people are more likely to enter an accounting career if their parents were accountants. This is the cause the child will have access to information about what a career in accountancy actually involves. People from other backgrounds may be less willing to enter a career that they know little about And this limits social mobility.
One of our tutors, Ros, grew up on a council estate but was lucky enough to go to a good school where he received useful career advice and from there he set his sights on a career in accounting and now he teaches accounting. But not all career services have an in depth understanding of what accountants do. He, like all of our tutors, has a passion for helping people to understand what a career in accounting means. All of our tutors offer independent information, advice and guidance to help our learners navigate their way in an accounting career, helping them to seize opportunities and enhance their chances of progression.
Among our tutor group we have people who have worked for firms of accountants, in industry and commerce, for government and charities. Our tutors have worked in accounting, tax, audit and finance. Some have been employees and some have run their own businesses. We pride ourselves in the quality of advice that we offer our learners. But also the advice we provide to prospective learners who may not yet be sure about whether a career in accounting is right for them.
So no matter where you are on your career journey you can ask us for information about what it means to become an accountant.
