Every year, the AAT Apprentice of the Year award highlights the dedication and achievements of outstanding apprentices across the UK. This year, we are incredibly proud that Ben Watson and Edward Smith have been shortlisted. Their hard work, perseverance, and commitment to both their studies and their communities make them truly deserving nominees. Here’s a closer look at their inspiring journeys.
Ben Watson – Balancing Accountancy and Emergency Service
Dedication, commitment, and the ability to balance multiple responsibilities are key traits of an exceptional apprentice. Ben Watson embodies all of these qualities and more.
Ben began his AAT journey in 2022 when he joined Cornwall Council as an Apprentice Accounting Technician, working towards his Level 2 qualification. In February 2024, he transitioned to Accountancy Learning to continue his studies at Level 3. His ability to thrive in a structured learning environment—balancing fortnightly college sessions with online study—has enabled him to make remarkable progress.
However, what truly sets Ben apart is his commitment to serving his community. Alongside his full-time apprenticeship, he also serves as an on-call firefighter, making himself available for emergency callouts for an astonishing 120 hours per week. There have been nights when he has attended fire incidents, only to head straight to college or work the next morning. The flexibility of remote learning has been instrumental in his ability to juggle these responsibilities seamlessly.
Ben’s dedication extends beyond his studies and emergency service role. He has taken on mentoring responsibilities at work, supporting new apprentices in their development. He has also worked closely with local schools to promote accountancy apprenticeships, encouraging young people to consider careers in finance while balancing his firefighting commitments. His ability to stay composed and focused under pressure has earned the admiration of colleagues, tutors, and peers alike.
Ben’s personal tutor, Sarah Wilson, has been particularly inspired by his unwavering dedication to his studies despite the demands of his role in the fire service. His story is a testament to the power of apprenticeships—not just as a path to qualifications, but as a means of developing resilience, discipline, and the ability to manage multiple commitments.
Ben’s incredible drive and selflessness make him a truly outstanding apprentice, and we are immensely proud of his nomination.
Edward Smith – A Journey of Determination and Mentorship
When someone goes above and beyond to help others, it’s clear they have a deep desire to achieve while making a difference. Edward Smith exemplifies this.
Ed achieved his Level 3 Certificate in Bookkeeping ahead of schedule in 2023, passing all exams on his first attempt. He has since continued his success, working towards completing his AAT Level 4 Apprenticeship three months early in April 2025.
Throughout his apprenticeship, Ed has overcome personal challenges while demonstrating a determination to succeed. Despite being naturally reserved, he stepped out of his comfort zone to promote PKF-Francis Clark’s apprenticeship programme to schools. He also mentors new apprentices, offering guidance and forming strong study groups during Taunton training sessions. His willingness to support others extends beyond his workplace—he has helped fellow students from different accountancy firms understand key Level 2 and 3 concepts, providing alternative approaches to complex questions.
Ed has also navigated the challenges of dyslexia with remarkable resilience. Rather than requesting additional time in exams, he has developed effective strategies for checking his work and communicating electronically, a skill he honed during the remote learning era of the Covid-19 pandemic. His structured approach to study, focus on target dates, and ability to keep his eye on the ‘end game’ are qualities that set him apart.
The past 18 months have been particularly difficult for Ed, following the tragic loss of his best friend in the Nottingham attacks. In response, he and his Bishops Hull Cricket Club teammates launched a fundraising initiative in memory of their friend Barnaby, demonstrating the strength of his character and his ability to turn grief into positive action.
Ed’s nomination is a well-earned recognition of his dedication, resilience, and kindness. He is a genuinely polite and hardworking young man who deserves this opportunity to shine.
A Moment of Recognition
Apprenticeships are more than just a route to professional qualifications; they shape individuals into capable, well-rounded professionals who contribute to both their industries and communities. Ben and Ed’s nominations for AAT Apprentice of the Year are a testament to their hard work, perseverance, and the support they have given to others along the way.
We are incredibly proud of their achievements and wish them the best of luck!
